Fenugreek: Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for your baby. However, some mothers may struggle with producing sufficient amounts. Research shows that fenugreek can be a safe, natural approach to boost breastmilk production.
A 14-day study in 78 mothers who exclusively breastfed their babies found that drinking herbal tea with fenugreek seeds increased breast milk production, which helped babies gain more weight.
Another study split 66 mothers into three groups. One received fenugreek tea, the second received a placebo, and the third received nothing. The volume of pumped breast milk increased from around 1.15 ounces (oz), or 34 milliliters (mL) in the control and placebo groups to 2.47 oz (73 mL) in the fenugreek group.
These studies both used fenugreek herbal tea versus supplements.
The research is promising, but you should discuss any concerns about breastmilk production with a healthcare professional who is well versed in both herbalism and lactation support.
(See Safety Information)
Alfalfa: A galactagogue used to support a healthy milk supply and may help increase milk production. Like nettle, alfalfa is also rich in vitamins and nutrients to help replenish a nursing mother.
Milk Thistle: Used with positive results by breastfeeding mothers in India and Europe for generations. Milk Thistle is a well-known galactagogue typically used in conjunction with other milk boosting herbs in a prepared tea.
Nettle: A dark, leafy green plant that is high in iron and considered to be very nutritious. For generations, women have used this herb after childbirth to treat anemia and as a galactagogue to help make more breast milk. A galactagogue is a substance that promotes or increases the flow of a mother's milk.
Oat Straw: Another nutrient dense galactagogue. Oat Straw is rich in the minerals iron, calcium, magnesium, silica, zinc, and manganese.
Raspberry Leaf: Commonly used in combination with other galactagogues to support and increase milk supply.
The above listed benefits are based on traditional and ancient uses. These may or may not be supported by scientific studies and western medicine philosophy.
